Access Wheelchair User Transfer Dock/Pontoon This transfer dock/pontoon was developed to serve several purposes and address a number of safety issues: it provides safe transfer of sailors whatever their disability, allows safe keel down transfer from a shelving shore, is modular and portable allowing Access dinghy owners to use waters otherwise not accessible to disabled sailors, it’s easy to launch, set up, recover and store. With this system the wheelchair is safely contained so as to prevent the danger of running off the pontoon. The boat can sit safely in the H dock where support and reassurance can be given from both sides. The new or vulnerable sailor does not feel exposed as would be the case if they were lifted over the water. This is to our knowledge the only transfer dock with these safety features on the market. The Access C-Crane hoist is included with this transfer dock/pontoon.

Access Dinghy Sailing Systems have developed a pontoon system that serves several purposes and addresses a number of safety concerns.
It provides safe transfer of sailors whatever their disability, allows safe "Keel down" Transfers from a shelving shore and is modular and portable allowing Access dinghy owners to use waters otherwise not accessible to disabled sailors and allowing easy storage.

The H-type pontoon has two floats each 4mtrs long, 900mm wide and 400mm deep which are around 60kg in weight and easily transportable. Two aluminum tubes, one across the center line the other aft, slide into place to assemble the floats into a catamaran 3mtrs overall width. The walkway is made from PVC foam sandwich fiberglass construction with handrail and 250mm high toe rail. The walkway is in 2mtr and 4mtr lengths and can be assembled up to 8mtrs long. These lengths are supported and stabilized at their join by a pair of floats each 1.2mtrs long 0.85mtrs wide and 0.25mtrs deep. This configuration has been developed for working off a beach. The 8mtr long walkway will extend the pontoon into sufficient water in most cases, more walkway can be added if needed.

The pontoon can work off a beach, wharf or marina. Two ropes from the pontoon tied shoreward keep the walkway under light compression and in position. On a beach the whole can be easily moved in and out as water level dictates.

A dinghy can be backed in between the floats of the H-type or alongside the T-type where a davit fitted with an Access C-crane personnel hoist easily transfers sailors into the boat from their wheelchair positioned at the end of the walkway. Wheelchairs cannot roll off the walkway due to the high (250mm) toe rail

An H-Type Access pontoon with its 4mtr walkway, a 4mtr extension walkway and floats and with guard rails to both walkways. With this system the keel down transfers can safely take place up to 11mtrs from the shore. Further 4mtr walkways with floats can be added for very shallowly shelving shores.

Castors are fitted to this H-type pontoon for easy launching and recovery. It is stored like this in the boat park for security. It has a short (2mtr) walkway for use off a fixed jetty to allow safe H-dock transfers into Access, Challenger and Sunbird boats. It is fitted to the jetty on either side or on the end according to the wind direction.

The boat can sit safely in the H-dock where support and reassurance can be given from both sides. The new or vulnerable sailor does not feel as exposed as would be the case if they were lifted over the water.

The Access pontoon is ideal for safe transfers into Challenger Trimarans as the pontoon float fits neatly between the Challengers hull and sponson allowing close, level, dignified and supported transfer of the sailor into the boat. it is also very suitable for use with the International 2.4, the Sunbird and of course the Access range of dinghies.

The T-type pontoon has one 4mtrs long float, 900mm wide and 400mm deep which is around 60kg in weight and easily transportable. The walkway fits onto the float giving lateral stability. A specially designed davit called an Access C-crane Hoist slots into the pontoon to lift sailors into and out of the boats.
